Joanne Currie
26 August to 1 October
Blood / River / Black / Water
Joanne Currie presents a myriad of lyrical new
artworks that have a strong political resonance
and are infused with her characteristic river painting
style. Currie’s works are inspired by her childhood
memories on the banks of the Maranoa River and
reveal an increasing complexity to her previous
works – drawing attention to the concerns of
contemporary Indigenous Australians, among
them being displacement of regional communities
and loss of heritage. A finalist in the 2011 Sulman
Award at the Art Gallery of New South Wales,
Currie is a self-taught artist whose works are
renowned for their flowing lines and depiction
of river landscapes.
