Whether they have tattooed faces, braided hair or moth masks, they are universally female. Deborah Klein's subject matter is women – saints, femme fatales, outcast heroines. These subjects might be anonymous but Klein has never been one to skirt the detail and in these paintings, prints and pastels, much attention is paid to the voluminous hair, decorative combs and lacey accessories. Such feminine touches notwithstanding, there is nothing pretty-pretty about these pictures with Klein's motifs only evoking ideas about identity and history.
